Location: Remote (*must be a US citizen living in the US with ability to travel to the company's HQ once a month)

A Fortune 500 real estate management company is looking for an ISSUES MANAGEMENT DIRECTOR to join its nimble in-house team who is a:

  • Strategic problem solver with a proven track record of solving reputational issues across corporate and, ideally, political settings
  • Engaging leader and team player with experience working alongside a legal team and balancing differing opinions from various stakeholders
  • Succinct corporate communicator who can brief, summarize, and advise on critical issues and matters in minimal words.

ISSUES MANAGEMENT DIRECTOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop strong relationships with and balance competing perspectives from stakeholders at all levels.
  • See the big picture to foresee reputation risks and opportunities while also honing in on important details to guide strategy and response to various issues.
  • Navigate issues amongst various stakeholders (legal, operations, asset management, executive leadership, etc.), third-party partners and vendors (including law firms and PR agencies), and external audiences (media, general public, and gov’t officials, etc.)
  • Work with all of the above (internal and external / third party teams) to manage sensitive issues.
  • Play a key role in both preventing issues before they occur and managing them when they do (getting the facts, solving for problems, creating and executing on solutions, and knowing how, when and to whom to escalate matters, etc.).
  • Advise stakeholders on communications and reputational issues both big (crime, environment disasters, lawsuits, etc.) and small (customer service matters, operational disturbances, etc.) to minimize reputational risk.
  • Draft communications materials to prepare stakeholders and spokespeople for issues that may become public.
  • Recognize and navigate public affairs issues (local elected official or government outreach) if a reputational component is involved.
  • Help with the creation and implementation of crisis preparedness work, such as best practices, playbooks, and protocols.
  • Assist with gathering, inputing, tracking, and reporting on data pertinent to the company’s ability to effectively manage issues.
  • Partner with PR agencies and external law firms on communications efforts as needed.

ISSUES MANAGEMENT DIRECTOR REQUIREMENTS:

  • 10 - 15 years of issues and crises corporate communications experience with a public affairs eye.
  • Must have experience working with a legal team, attorneys, etc.
  • Experience working at an agency/firm on an issues, corporate reputation, and/or crises team is strongly preferred (very familiar with a heavy volume and wide variety of issues and working with multiple stakeholders)
  • Played a central role in anticipating and thus preparing for issues prior to them happening.
  • Proven track record of solving high-volume reputational issues in corporate settings.
  • Consistent experience advising everyone from the highest leadership to a local stakeholder.
  • Strong experience drafting messaging for issues communications for stakeholders and spokespeople to share both internally and publicly.
  • Chameleon of sorts that can read a room and adapt their communication to different audiences - from level of poise and gravitas to work with corporate senior leadership to being dare we say “funny” around the internal team and approachable to stakeholders at all levels.
  • Brief but brilliant communicator who effectively summarizes complex issues to senior leaders. Long winded and wordy communications will not do well.
  • Proficiency in developing, implementing and executing on crisis preparedness best practices, protocols, and playbooks.
  • Impeccable leadership and teamwork, including working with and mentoring both team members and business partners.
  • Firm believer that life is too short to have colleagues you don’t like.

Base Salary Range: $170,000 - $220,000 (based on location, skillset and experience)
